Phases of Labor

Early Labor

Contractions are usually mild and come in a regular pattern anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes apart. They typically last less than a minute and you probably will feel that you can still go about your normal activities at home. You may find it helpful to take a walk, take a relaxing bath, or have your labor coach give you a nice long massage with Relax With Me™ Whipped Massage Gel. At this phase it’s most important to stay rested, relaxed, and hydrated, since you’ve got a long journey ahead of you. Depending on whether or not this is your first baby, this phase can last anywhere from 8 to 12 hours.

Active Labor

Contractions become longer, harder, and closer together. They now come about every 5 minutes and last a good minute. If you haven’t done so already or are still at home, now is the time call your midwife or doctor, grab your bag (and your Phases of Labor Comfort Collection™), and head for the hospital or birthing center. You will find that you are becoming increasingly tired and irritable with your surroundings. It is at this time that positive distractions like gentle massage (using Relax with Me Whipped Massage Gel), soft music, or rhythmic breathing will be most beneficial to you. If the sterile “hospital” odor becomes bothersome to your heightened senses, now is the time to use your Breathe with Me™ Room/Linen Mist.

Transition Labor

This is the final and most intense phase of labor (marks the transition from labor into delivery). Contractions are very strong and are coming so close together that you may not be able to distinguish one from another. You may find yourself feeling nauseated, shaky, and at the point when you’ve lost faith in your ability to cope. It is usually at this phase that women find they do not want to be touched, and they may even harshly snap at their labor coach. However, this is the phase of labor when you will need his/her support more than ever and the constant encouragement that the pain will be over soon. Now is the point in the labor process that your Lift Me™ Cooling Body Mist, with the known soothing effects of neroli and lavender oil, will be an absolute essential aid in keeping you calm and in control.
